ST MELLION INTERNATIONAL RESORT
Saltash, Cornwall, 11 miles NW of Plymouth PL12 6SD

Following a comprehensive £20 million redevelopment, the St Mellion International Resort now features the recently opened brand new 4* hotel plus significant improvements to the Nicklaus Signature Course and the Kernow Course (formerly the Old Course).

St Mellion is arguably the premier golfing destination in the South-West, boasting two championship courses, and has welcomed the European Tour's elite on no less than six occasions for the Benson and Hedges International.

Nicklaus Course - Opened in 1988, the Nicklaus Course at St Mellion was the Golden Bear's first project in the UK, and to this day Jack rates it as one of his best creations. The £2.5 million investment now complete was overseen by the Nicklaus design team.

From the championship tee markers the course measures 7,019 yards and is a thorough examination, but there are tees to suit golfers of all abilities. The Nicklaus is typical of its designer's architectural ethos, with a premium being placed on finding the correct position from the elevated tees in order to attack the flags. Inaccuracy will be punished severely by the strategically positioned bunkers and water hazards around this South-Western gem.

Kernow Course - Formerly known as the Old Course, St Mellion's Kernow is often in the shadow of Jack Nicklaus' creation next door, but it is a fine championship layout in its own right. Though not particularly long by modern standards - the Kernow measures 5,782 yards - there is no shortage of challenge and intrigue.

A major face-lift has seen the addition of new lakes and bunkers, plus some totally rebuilt putting surfaces. Spectacular scenery surrounds the course, whose highlights include the short 12th, where the green is guarded closely by water, and the memorable par-4 closing hole which demands two excellent strikes.

CHINA FLEET GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Saltash, Cornwall, 6 miles NE of Plymouth city centre PL12 6LJ

Situated across the River Tamar from Plymouth, China Fleet's championship golf course affords tremendous views across the water, and is one of South-West England's most picturesque golfing destinations.

The 6,551 yard layout is a regular venue for the PGA Europro Tour players, and the par of 72 is a stern test from the medal tees. Chine Fleet is dedicated to providing all visitors an appropriate challenge, and this is reflected in the establishment of the Blue Tee Course for Ladies, which makes the most difficult holes on the course more manageable.

The undulating landscape makes it important to find the correct position from which to attack the greens; accuracy is of far greater value than power around this stunning South-West gem, which is a terrific option for a golf break in Cornwall.

BOWOOD PARK HOTEL & GOLF COURSE
Lanteglos, North Cornwall, 1 mile from Camelford, 40 miles NW of Plymouth PL32 9RF

Since its inauguration in 1992, Bowood Park has established a reputation as one of the South-West's premier golfing destinations. The 6,672 yard parkland layout was designed by Bob Sandow and was constructed according to USGA specifications to ensure that the putting surfaces remain playable throughout the year.

Bowood Park is a tale of two nine-hole loops; the opening half is relatively forgiving, but visiting players must negotiate the intimidating 7th hole, which at 600 yards is the longest in Cornwall.

The course's highlights are around the turn; the 10th is a sweeping par-5 that dog-legs down into the valley, while the 11th is an exacting 228 yard par-3 which would be at home at any championship venue. The 12th is widely regarded to be Bowood Park's signature hole, a stunning par-4 set against the backdrop of the River Allen.

The par-72 course is a true pleasure to play, and provides an appropriate challenge to golfers of all abilities, making Bowood Park one of the South-West's best golf break destinations.

TREVOSE GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Constantine Bay, North Cornwall, 3 miles West of Padstow, 11 miles North of Newquay PL28 8JB

Trevose Golf & Country Club is arguably the finest golfing destination in the South-West, featuring an outstanding championship links course and two excellent nine-hole loops.

Championship Course - Trevose's championship golf course was opened in 1924, and was designed by the esteemed Harry Colt, whose outstanding pedigree is a result of his work at Augusta, Wentworth, Pine Valley, Sunningdale, Muirfield and Royal Portrush, a list that should help to underline the quality at Trevose. The remarkable beauty of the Cornish coast is the backdrop for Colt's 6,863 yard classic, which is comprised of two loops; the outward half hugs the rugged seaside, before you turn for home and play the inward links of the closing stretch. Golfers will battle the elements that batter this exposed landscape, where the smooth and pure putting surfaces are protected by treacherous pot bunkers and severe rough.

Headland Course - The Headland Course is a charming little nine-holer that was laid out by the legendary Peter Aliss in 1993, and offers good variety during a stay at Trevose. The loop works its way out to the 5th tee at the point of the headland, from which the views towards St.Ives are incredible. The greens on the Headland rival the quality of the Championship Course.

Short Course - Trevose's Short Course is a beautiful little nine-hole course that is ideal for beginners, juniors, or golfers looking for some light relief from the rigours of the Championship layout. Visitors are sure to enjoy the views out to sea as the course winds its way around the ancient Chapel of St. Constantine.
